Blueprints & Schematics Guide

Blueprints let you save, share, and replicate your creations in Scrap Mechanic. From simple vehicles to complex bases, the blueprint system is essential for builders who want to preserve their work or share it with the community. This guide covers blueprint acquisition, usage, Schematic Boxes, and Steam Workshop integration.

Blueprint Acquisition Methods

Creating Your Own Blueprints

• Blueprint Tool — Use the Blueprint Tool to select and save any creation in Creative Mode
• Selection — Click and drag to select the area you want to save
• Naming — Give your blueprint a descriptive name for easy identification
• Storage — Blueprints are saved locally and can be accessed from the Blueprint Library

Finding Blueprints In-Game

Survival Mode Usage Restrictions

Blueprints work differently in Survival Mode compared to Creative Mode. Here are the key restrictions:

• No free placement — You can't just spawn a blueprint for free; you need the materials
• Material cost — Loading a blueprint requires all the blocks and parts it uses (must be in your inventory or nearby storage)
• Schematic requirement — Some advanced parts require the corresponding Schematic Box to be unlocked first
• Build area — Blueprints must be placed on valid, flat terrain
• No creative blocks — Blueprints containing Creative-only items can't be loaded in Survival
• Size limits — Very large blueprints may be restricted or require multiple loads

How to Load a Blueprint in Survival

1. Craft or obtain a Blueprint Tool
2. Open the Blueprint Library and select your blueprint
3. A ghost preview appears — position it where you want to build
4. The game shows which materials you have and which you're missing
5. If you have all materials, confirm to place the blueprint
6. The creation is built instantly (consuming all required materials)

Schematic Box Functions

Schematic Boxes are rare items that unlock new crafting recipes. They are essential for progression in Survival Mode.

• Appearance — Small blue-glowing boxes, easy to spot in dark areas
• Where to find — Ruins (rare), Warehouses (third floor, hidden rooms), underground mine treasure rooms
• How to use — Take to a Schematic Bot at a Mechanic Station; interact to scan and unlock the recipe
• What they unlock — Advanced vehicle parts, weapons, tools, building blocks, and crafting recipes
• One-time use — Each Schematic Box unlocks one recipe; consumed on use
• Priority — Focus on unlocking Spud Gun, advanced engines, and useful tools first

Tactical Backpack Blueprints

In the 1.0 Drilling Thunder update, the tactical backpack system allows you to carry and deploy small blueprints on the go.

• Quick deploy — Deploy from your backpack anywhere, anytime
• Material cost — Still requires materials to deploy
• Use cases — Emergency turret, portable crafting, temporary bridge, quick shelter

Exporting Blueprints

1. Open the Blueprint Library in-game

Importing Blueprints

Steam Workshop

Steam Workshop is the primary platform for sharing and discovering Scrap Mechanic blueprints.

• Subscribing — Click "Subscribe" to automatically download a blueprint; it appears in your library
• Uploading — Export your blueprint, then upload to Workshop with a title, description, and screenshots
