Base Building Guide

Your base is your sanctuary in Scrap Mechanic Survival — a place to store resources, craft items, farm crops, and defend against robot raids. This guide covers everything from choosing a location to designing a fully automated, defensible compound.

Choosing a Location

Five critical factors when selecting your base site:

  1. Flat terrain — Building on slopes causes alignment issues. Look for large flat areas.
  2. Water access — Essential for farming and vacuum pump irrigation. Rivers or lakes are ideal.
  3. Road proximity — Near a main road for easy vehicle travel to Warehouses and Mechanic Stations.
  4. Natural defenses — Cliffs, water, or dense forest can reduce the directions bots can attack from.
  5. Resource proximity — Nearby trees, rocks, and ruins reduce gathering time early on.

Temporary vs Permanent Bases

Temporary Base (First Few Days)

  • Build near the crashed ship or first Mechanic Station
  • A simple 5x5 wooden hut with a bed and storage is enough
  • Focus on crafting your first vehicle and tools
  • Don't invest in heavy defenses yet

Permanent Base (After First Vehicle)

  • Choose a location with all five factors above
  • Plan for expansion — leave room for farms, garages, and workshops
  • Build defenses before farming at scale
  • Use metal and concrete blocks instead of wood

Layered Defense Design

A good base uses multiple layers of defense, not just one wall:

Layer 1: Outer Wall

  • Minimum height — 7 blocks high (Haybots climb 3-block walls)
  • Attack gaps — Leave openings at the 3rd and 5th block levels to shoot through
  • Corner reinforcement — Double-thick corners, bots target them first
  • Material — Metal or concrete blocks; wood burns in the 1.0 fire system

Layer 2: Spike Traps & Moats

  • Place spike strips along the base of walls for passive damage
  • Dig a moat (2-3 blocks deep) around the wall — bots fall in and can't climb out
  • Use the Claygun (1.0) to shape terrain, but note some bots can dig through clay

Layer 3: Automated Turrets

  • Mount Spud Gun turrets on wall corners and towers
  • Use sensors to trigger turrets only when bots are nearby (saves ammo)
  • Elevate turrets for better line of sight
  • Keep spare ammo in nearby storage

Layer 4: Interior Defenses

  • Internal walls to slow bots that breach the outer wall
  • Store valuables in an underground bunker
  • Trap doors and piston-controlled gates

Functional Zoning

Organize your base into dedicated zones for efficiency:

ZonePurposeKey Blocks
Farm ZoneCrop growing, irrigation, packingFarmland, water, vacuum pipes, Packing Station
Crafting ZoneAll crafting stations in one areaCraftbot, Cookbot, Dressbot, Schematic Bot
Storage ZoneOrganized resource storageChests, labeled signs, sorting systems
Garage ZoneVehicle parking and repairLarge flat area, vehicle lift, fuel station
Living ZoneBed, food, respawn pointBed, kitchen, seating
Defense ZoneTurrets, ammo, control roomTurrets, sensors, logic controllers

Automated Doors & Gates

Use pistons and controllers to create automated entry points:

  • Piston gate — A wall section that retracts when you approach (sensor + piston + controller)
  • Garage door — Vertical sliding door for vehicle access (multiple pistons synchronized)
  • Drawbridge — A bridge that lowers over a moat (hinge + piston)
  • Timed lights — Exterior lights that turn on at night via sensor or timer

Flame Protection (1.0 Drilling Thunder)

The 1.0 update introduces realistic fire physics. Some bots use fire attacks, and fire can spread to wooden structures. Protect your base:

  • Use non-flammable materials — Metal, concrete, and stone blocks don't burn
  • Keep wood away from walls — If you use wood for decoration, isolate it from potential fire sources
  • Water access — Have water nearby to extinguish fires (buckets or vacuum pump systems)
  • Fire breaks — Leave gaps between wooden structures to prevent fire spread
  • Fire-resistant roofing — Use metal sheets for roofs, especially over farm areas

Base Building Tips

  1. Start with a blueprint — Plan your base layout on paper or in Creative Mode before building in Survival
  2. Build the wall first — Get your outer perimeter up before interior details
  3. Elevate your farm — Build farms on raised platforms to make it harder for bots to reach crops
  4. Use signs for organization — Label storage chests and zones
  5. Build a vehicle lift — Makes vehicle repairs and modifications much easier
  6. Underground storage — Dig a bunker for your most valuable resources
  7. Light everything — Bots spawn more in darkness, and lights help you see raids coming
  8. Leave expansion room — You'll always want more space. Don't build right up to your wall.
