Vehicle & Truck Building Guide

Vehicles are the heart of Scrap Mechanic. From simple starter cars to massive mining trucks, the building system lets you create almost anything. This guide covers vehicle basics, engine types, drivetrains, and specialized vehicles like mining rigs and boats.

Vehicle Basics

Every vehicle needs these core components:

  1. Frame/Chassis — The structural body of the vehicle (blocks, beams, panels)
  2. Wheels — Standard wheels, off-road tires, or tracks
  3. Engine — The power source (gas engine, electric motor, or thruster)
  4. Driver Seat — The control point with steering and throttle inputs
  5. Fuel Tank — Stores gasoline for gas engines
  6. Connections — Use the Connection Tool to wire the seat to the engine and wheels

Truck Design Essentials

Building a reliable truck requires attention to weight distribution, suspension, and power:

Weight Distribution

  • Engine placement — Place the engine near the center or over the drive wheels for traction
  • Cargo area — Keep heavy loads low and centered to prevent tipping
  • Front-heavy vs rear-heavy — Front-heavy = understeer; Rear-heavy = oversteer. Aim for balance.

Suspension

  • Off-road trucks — Use long-travel suspension or wishbone suspension for rough terrain
  • Road trucks — Stiffer suspension for better handling at speed
  • Heavy loads — Stiffer springs to prevent bottoming out

Drivetrain

  • 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) — Best for off-road and heavy loads. Connect engine to all four wheels.
  • RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive) — Good for trucks and drift cars. Simpler setup.
  • FWD (Front-Wheel Drive) — Good for small cars, less common in Scrap Mechanic.
  • 6WD/8WD — For massive mining trucks and heavy haulers. More wheels = more traction.

Specialized Vehicles

Mining Vehicles

In the 1.0 Drilling Thunder update, you can mount drills directly on vehicles for efficient mining. A good mining vehicle needs:

  • Drill mount — Front or rear-mounted drill connected to the engine
  • Heavy frame — Drilling generates vibration and stress; reinforce the chassis
  • Large fuel tank — Drilling consumes fuel quickly
  • 6WD or tracks — Maximum traction on uneven mine floors
  • Cargo space — Room to store mined ore
  • Lighting — The underground mine is dark; add plenty of lights

Motorcycles

  • 2 wheels with a single engine
  • Lightweight frame for high speed and agility
  • Use a narrow chassis and position the seat centrally
  • Good for quick scouting trips, but low cargo capacity

Boats

  • Use buoyant blocks (wood, foam) for the hull
  • Power with thrusters or a propeller connected to an engine
  • Steer with a rudder or differential thrust
  • Keep the center of gravity low to prevent capsizing
  • Useful for reaching islands and crossing large bodies of water

Planes & Flying Vehicles

  • Use thrusters for propulsion and wings/blocks for lift
  • Control surfaces (ailerons, elevator, rudder) connected to the driver seat
  • Keep the vehicle light and aerodynamic
  • Requires practice to fly; start with simple designs

Connection Tool Wiring

The Connection Tool is essential for vehicle functionality. Here's the standard wiring:

  1. Driver Seat → Engine — Connect throttle (W/S) to engine power
  2. Driver Seat → Steering — Connect steering (A/D) to steering hinges or wheel controllers
  3. Engine → Wheels — Connect engine output to drive wheels
  4. Fuel Tank → Engine — Connect fuel supply to engine
  5. Optional: Lights → Seat — Connect lights to a toggle switch on the seat
  6. Optional: Horn → Seat — Connect horn to a button

Vehicle Building Tips

  1. Start simple — Build a basic 4-wheel car first, then upgrade
  2. Test in Creative — Experiment with designs in Creative Mode before building in Survival
  3. Use the lift — Build on a vehicle lift for easy access to the underside
  4. Balance is key — A well-balanced vehicle handles better and is less likely to tip
  5. Protect the engine — Add armor around the engine; if it's destroyed, the vehicle is dead
  6. Add a roll cage — Prevents the driver from being crushed if the vehicle rolls
  7. Carry spare fuel — Always bring extra gasoline on long trips
  8. Label controls — Use signs to label switches for lights, winches, and other accessories
