Spud Gun & Weapons Guide

Combat in Scrap Mechanic Survival centers around the Spud Gun — a makeshift potato launcher that serves as your primary ranged weapon. This guide covers all weapons, ammo types, turret setup, and defense placement strategies.

Spud Gun Basics

The Spud Gun is the first ranged weapon most players acquire. It fires potatoes as projectiles and can be found in Warehouses, ruins, or crafted once you have the right schematic.

  • Ammo — Potatoes (grown on farms or found in crates)
  • Damage — Moderate per shot, effective against most bots
  • Fire rate — Semi-automatic, click to fire each shot
  • Range — Medium, projectiles arc over distance
  • Where to find — Warehouses, rare crates in ruins, Schematic Box unlock

Ammo Type Comparison

Different ammo types have different damage and effects:

Weapon Modification Parts

Craft and find modification parts to upgrade your weapons:

  • Extended Magazine — More ammo per reload
  • Scope — Better accuracy at long range
  • Suppressor — Reduces noise (bots less likely to detect)
  • Rapid Fire Mod — Increases fire rate
  • Damage Mod — Increases per-shot damage

Auto Turret Setup

Automated turrets are essential for base defense. Here's how to set them up:

Components Needed

  • Spud Gun (or any weapon that can be mounted)
  • Turret Mount (rotating base)
  • Sensor (detects nearby bots)
  • Controller (processes sensor input and controls turret)
  • Ammo container (potatoes)
  • Power source (battery or generator)

Setup Steps

  1. Mount the Spud Gun on a Turret Mount
  2. Place a Sensor nearby, set to detect hostile bots
  3. Connect the Sensor to a Controller using the Connection Tool
  4. Connect the Controller to the Turret Mount (rotation) and Spud Gun (fire)
  5. Set up an ammo feed from a potato container to the gun
  6. Test by luring a bot near the sensor — the turret should track and fire

Turret Placement Tips

  • Elevate — Place turrets on towers or wall corners for maximum line of sight
  • Overlap coverage — Position turrets so their fields of fire overlap
  • Protect the turret — Turrets can be destroyed by bots; add armor around the base
  • Ammo supply — Keep a large potato storage near each turret
  • Blind spots — Place turrets to cover each other's blind spots

Melee Weapon Rankings

  1. Chainsaw — Highest DPS, but rare and uses fuel
  2. Sledgehammer — Reliable, multi-purpose (combat + gathering)
  3. Baseball Bat — Fast swing, good for knocking back groups
  4. Fire Extinguisher — Utility weapon, pushes bots and extinguishes fire

Defense Placement Strategy

Effective base defense requires planning weapon and turret placement:

  • Chokepoints — Place turrets where bots must funnel through (gates, bridges)
  • Height advantage — Turrets on elevated positions see farther and are harder to reach
  • Layered defense — Outer spikes → wall turrets → interior turrets → bunker
  • Mobile defense — Keep a vehicle with a mounted weapon for chasing down bots
  • Lighting — Well-lit areas reduce bot spawns and make it easier to see threats

Combat Tips

  1. Prioritize Red Explosive Totebots — They can one-shot you and destroy vehicles. Take them out first.
  2. Keep moving — Standing still makes you an easy target for Tapebots
  3. Use terrain — Fight from high ground or behind cover
  4. Bring food — Health doesn't regenerate; always carry healing items
  5. Aim for the head — Critical hits deal more damage to most bots
  6. Don't fight at night — Bots are more aggressive and harder to see. Wait for dawn if possible.
  7. Use the environment — Lure bots into spike traps or off cliffs
